Digital School OF Distinction
As reported previously our school has received a Digital School of Distinction. The Digital Schools Award is an initiative which recognises excellence in a school’s approach to the integration of ICT in learning and teaching. This award aims to build on the excellent progress already made by schools in ICT integration and to encourage them to strive for further progression and improvement.
Following on from the success of its predecessor initiative "The Digital Schools Award" this initiative supported by Dublin West Education Centre, PDST Technology in Education, IPPN, INTO, CESI and HP and Microsoft, plan to drive the integration of ICT in teaching and learning in Irish Primary Schools to new levels. The award is currently open to primary schools only. Following a half day evaluation from the judges our school was deemed to have met and indeed surpassed the many criteria needed to achieve this. What it means for our school is that we will receive a laptop/tablet, a reduction on a digital printing solution from HP should we so wish to avail of the offer and a plaque for the school. We are the first school in Kilkenny and one of only a handful yet in the country who has received this recognition.
The school plans to further its use of ICT by continuing the game creation skills the children have being developing using Kodu and 3D Game Creator.
Microsoft recently came to our school to record videos of our use of IT in the school. They detailed our use of Scratch Programming, 4 to 12 Maths and Microsoft Kodu in the school. These highly impressive videos are now live and can be viewed on the school website under the "Microsoft Innovation School" page or also at http://www.pil-network.ie/page52.html
